SUMMARY:Organiser of Raymond and Beverly Sackler Public Lecture: Professor Anne Lingford-Hughes 'The brain in addiction – is it different?'
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to announce that Professor Anne Lingford-Hughes\, will be delivering our annual Raymond and Beverly Sackler Distinguished Lecture in Neuroscience\, established in honour of Professor Sir Keith Peters. \nAll drugs of abuse alter brain function\, but how do they do this\, what makes someone vulnerable to addiction and are any changes enduring? This lecture will describe how brain imaging has enabled us to investigate the impact of different drugs of abuse on the brain and how this knowledge helps us develop better prevention and treatment strategies. \nProfessor Anne Lingford-Hughes leads the Centre for Psychiatry and Addiction Biology at Imperial College London. She is also a Consultant Psychiatrist with a particular interest in pharmacological treatments of alcohol problems and other substance addictions at Central North West London NHS Foundation Trust. Her research has focused on using neuroimaging and neuropharmacological challenges to characterize the neurobiology of addiction. The aim of her research programme is to better understand neurobiology underpinning these disorders to improve treatment. \n\nProgramme \n5:00 pm- Registration and drinks reception \n6:00 pm- Lecture begins \n7:00 pm- Close \nFAQs \nWhat are my transport/parking options for getting to and from the event? \nPlease note that car parking at the Hadyn Ellis Building is limited. SUMMARY:The Waterloo Foundation Annual Meeting Public Lecture
DESCRIPTION:This year’s Waterloo Foundation Public Lecture will be delivered by Professor Mary A. Carskadon\, from Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University\, Director\, Chronobiology and Sleep Research Laboratory. \nThere will be a drinks reception from 5-6 pm followed by the lecture 6-7pm. \nHow changes in sleep biology create a perfect storm affecting adolescent well-being \nThe critical role that sleep plays in adolescence is increasingly well documented for a range of areas including brain maturation\, learning\, emotional wellbeing and physical health. Insufficient sleep\, daytime sleepiness and circadian misalignment in adolescence have been variously shown to contribute to reduced quality of life and productivity\, greater risk of depression and obesity\, higher rates of drowsy driving crashes and illness and may increase incidents of anti-social behaviours\, aggression\, substance abuse and self-harm. \nThis presentation will provide an overview of findings and an update of key evidence of the important role of sleep in adolescent development; it will also argue that the ‘perfect storm’ metaphor applies to sleep patterns of adolescents in the sense that developmental trajectories of biopsychosocial factors conspire to limit the quantity of sleep for many adolescents who live in industrial societies in the twenty-first century.

SUMMARY:Preparing your NHS Business Case
DESCRIPTION:With input from the EMAHSN staff\, this interactive and informative event on ‘Preparing your NHS Business Case’ will enable you to prepare better business cases. \nThis free to attend event is being held as part of the INSTILS programme – a project part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund\, click here to be re-directed to further information about the project. \nDuring the event you will also learn about: \n– What is a business case\, what is its purpose and why it is so important? \n– Who reviews the business case and how are they evaluated from a commissioning point of view? \n– How to construct a good business case \nThe Challenge as a supplier to the NHS is often that when you have a product which from your perspective improves patient outcomes and saves cost you still cannot get it adopted by the NHS. This is often because there is not a fully developed business case\, without this a group within the NHS interested in taking on board a new product or service are unlikely to get approval of the case for change before procurement of the innovation can proceed. \nOrganisations that supply to the NHS are often challenged by the process\, timescales\, evidence and documentary requirements. This can often seem like an unnecessary complication\, or simply a reason to not issue a purchase order. A good business case is fundamental to successful adoption and developing a long term business partnership. Preparing the business case can also be difficult for your NHS contacts because they are busy or not experienced in their preparation and often even more difficult for companies with little or no experience of the process. \nDue to limited seating numbers are restricted to one delegate per organisation. \nProgramme \nSpeaker Profiles \nBook Now
