SUMMARY:Science and Technology Pavilion\, National Eisteddfod of Wales
DESCRIPTION:Science and Technology Pavilion\, National Eisteddfod of Wales\, Llandow\, Vale of Glamorgan\, 4-11 August 2012 \n  \nA message from John Roberts at Penn Pharma: \n  \nScience and Technology is now an important part of the National Eisteddfod of Wales with the Science and Technology Pavilion being a major attraction on the Eisteddfod field (usually in excess of 20\,000 visitors to the Pavilion and more than 150\,000 visitors in total during the week). In the Pavilion\, Welsh companies and academic institutions organise scientific exhibits and competitions of interest to children and adults. Penn Pharma has supported the Pavilion in 2008 (Cardiff) and 2010 (Ebbw Vale)\, with a very favourable response. \n  \nAs a member of the Eisteddfod’s Central Science & Technology Panel I would like to invite MediWales members to express their interest in supporting the Science Pavilion in 2012\, in the form of exhibitions of your biomedical technology and financial sponsorship (different packages available). \n  \nMediWales members may contact me (john.roberts@pennpharm.com) or Elfed Roberts (no relation!) the Eisteddfod’s CEO Elfed@eisteddfod.org.uk to discuss further.

This workshop brings together leading clinicians and sensor technology developers. It builds on the significant interest in the sensing community in addressing healthcare applications. It also draws upon the efforts and strategic objectives of the HealthTech & Medicines KTN’s mapping of unmet clinical needs\, involving clinicians in research and collaborative R&D with the healthcare and medicine industry. \nThe workshop will discuss and review the current critical clinical needs in four different areas of clinical specialities and will provide the opportunity to discuss directly with the leading clinicians any ideas for potential sensing solutions. The clinical specialities which will be covered during this event are; \n\nOrthopaedics & Trauma\nEmergency Medicine\nPaediatrics\nUrology\n\nThe main aims of this event are as follows; \n\nFacilitate new clinician/industry collaborations in a number of areas of clinical specialities.\nIdentify barriers to innovation and commercialisation\nReview current funding opportunities and identify funding gaps\nProvide networking opportunities to identify partners\nReview supporting mechanisms available to accelerate innovation and commercialisation through KTNs\nReview current pre-clinical and clinical trials and identify best practice to accelerate regulatory approvals\n\nWho should attend?\nThis workshop is primarily about exploring a range of clinical needs where sensing technology has the potential to provide a solution for the benefits of the patients and healthcare providers. It will therefore be primarily of interest to: \n\nCompanies seeking to exploit their sensing technologies in new medical areas\nCompanies seeking to identify leading clinicians to establish long term collaborations\nCompanies and academics with sensing technologies that they consider may have healthcare applications\nLarge medical device and diagnostics companies interested in directly sponsoring innovative ideas and working with clinicians/academics and SME’s to establish new collaborations\nClinicians active in the identified areas wishing to discuss potential solutions and explore new collaboration opportunities\nClinicians from other areas who are interested in transferable technologies of relevance to their own needs\nAcademics involved in developing new technologies for sensors and new sensor applications\nFunding organisations seeking to identify strategic priority areas for future funding calls\n\n\nRegistration \nDue to the anticipated popularity of this workshop and the limited number of places we request potential participants to contact us directly in order to register their interest in attending. To do this please send an e-mail to Robert Angus at robert.angus@espktn.org stating the expertise/ technology you will bring to the debate. \nIn your e-mail please also indicate which of the clinical areas addressed by the workshop (Orthopaedics & Trauma\, Emergency Medicine\, Paediatrics\, Urology) interests you the most.

SUMMARY:CHIRAL Seminar\, 29 Feb
DESCRIPTION:Professor Marcus Longley and Amy Simpson\nWelsh Institute for Health and Social Care (WIHSC) \n‘How would patients regulate new medicines?’ \nSynopsis: A recent Citizens Jury consisting of people with serious and rare disorders spent five days considering how the risks and benefits of new medicines should be assessed. What factors were relevant\, and how should they be weighed? Should regulators be more permissive? And what role should patients have in all this? Professor Marcus Longley and Amy Simpson\, from WIHSC\, University of Glamorgan\, describe what happened when the jurors got to grips with the evidence\, and discuss what it all might all mean for the future of medicines’ regulation in Europe. \nFor any further information please contact Sarah Wright on ext.2719 or chiralseminars@swansea.ac.uk
