DESCRIPTION:Swansea University will be bringing together experts from industry and academia to share their knowledge and experience on the European Union\, and what the referendum means for Wales. \nThis event is free to attend\, and open to all; from businesses and academic colleagues to everyone within the local community.  It takes the format of a series of bite size presentations\, looking historically at why the UK originally went into the EU\, and moving right through to today\, and the reasons and misgivings for remaining in the EU. \nDelegates will hear from our students\, on the importance of voting\, and from a Welsh based business in the Medical sector\, actively working with European partners.  The event will include presentations from leading academics in the field\, and will conclude with a look at the likelihood of an in-out referendum\, based on some of the latest research at Swansea University. \nPrior to the presentations\, delegates will have the opportunity to take a tour of Swansea University’s  new state of the art Bay campus and peruse the ‘Research as Art’ gallery\, which showcases a wide range of research conducted at the University with funding and partners from both inside and outside the EU. \nProfessor Martin Stringer\, Pro-Vice Chancellor for Swansea University\, and chair for the event will be welcoming delegates to the event with an overview of Swansea University’s relationship with the EU. \nProfessor Stringer commented: \n“As a University\, we are in the privileged position of being able to draw on a vast knowledge base both from within the University\, and externally.  This has enabled us to put on an event for local stakeholders across Wales\, to look at a number of key issues\, and the associated pros and cons of remaining in the EU in an informative and digestible format.” \nThis event will be taking place prior to a BBC Wales live televised debate with Huw Edwards at Swansea University’s  Great Hall. \nClick here for further information and to register \n

SUMMARY:KTN: Digital Health Speed Networking
DESCRIPTION:The Knowledge Transfer Network is hosting an exclusive event that will bring industry leaders together with high-growth potential entrepreneurs offering innovative digital solutions that use personal data to transform healthcare \nThis ‘digital meets health‘ networking session will open doors to larger brands who are looking to the digital community to implement agile innovation. The session will showcase companies developing disruptive data capture technologies\, innovative data-driven applications and visualisation techniques\, and new ways of sharing personal data. Register here to attend this free event \nConfirmed participants currently include:  \n\nAxa PPP Healthcare: There are stories in the press everyday about the ageing population; the lack of resources to support older people and hospital beds being “blocked” by people who are clinically discharged but unable to leave because of the lack of services to support them – be that in their own homes or in a residential setting. The private medical insurance provider is looking at innovative solutions to support both health and social care needs to enable people to live safe and happy lives with less reliance on the hospital environment.\nMerck Sharp & Dohme: The healthcare organisation is interested in re-imagining healthcare through the eyes of start-ups to help look beyond pharmaceuticals to holistically improve patient care.\nGlaxoSmithKline: The British pharmaceutical company are particularly interested in technologies to enable monitoring of patients outside the clinic during clinical trials.\nAstraZeneka: The global biopharmaceutical company is looking to optimise outcomes for patients through the use of digital health tools working in combination with their drug product portfolio. They are particularly interested in a number of technology types including: digital systems to ensure medicines compliance\, non-invasive technologies to measure patient parameters and digital systems to analyse the data that these systems generate\, and systems to enable the use of patient information to efficiently deliver treatment and care.\nBupa: It is a transformative period of time for healthcare:  patients’ needs are changing as digital technology becomes more prevalent\, and customer purchasing habits are becoming more geared towards ‘immediate value’.  The future of healthcare needs to be designed for everyone\, taking into account diversity in needs\, cultural backgrounds\, motivations and behaviours. ‘One size fits all’ will not work in healthcare.  It is this increased demand that is leading Bupa to focus on the creation of person-centred digital products and services worldwide.\nJohnson & Johnson: Johnson & Johnson is interested in sensors and wearables bringing a new dimension in data capture machine learning\, algorithms and analytics leading to messaging & coaching about health in general. They are also looking for any clearly differentiated technology to help patients with a chronic or degenerative condition.\n\nEvent format \nThe event format has been designed to connect entrepreneurs with potential clients and collaborators through a series of rapid ‘speed dating’ style sessions\, which may lead on to successful commercial relationships. Digital innovator attendees will rotate around the room with strictly five minutes within which to have a one-to-one conversation or pitch to each industry representative. There will be refreshments throughout the evening. \nHow to Apply \nIf you are a digital company and would like to be considered for this opportunity\, please fill out our short online application form by 12 noon Tuesday 5th July.  If you are an established brand and would like to attend as an industry partner\, Astrid Ayel will advise on availability and potential opportunities for future involvement in the speed networking event series. \nKey Dates \nOpportunity opens: Monday 6th June\nClosing date for applications: 12 noon Tuesday 5th July\nSuccessful applicants notified: Friday 7th July\nEvent: 5.30pm – 8.30pm Wednesday 20th July

SUMMARY:UK Medical Devices Mission to China
DESCRIPTION:China is one of the world’s biggest markets for life sciences. Its overall Medical Technology market alone is estimated to be worth US $17bn\, with annual growth forecast at 20% through to 2018. The UK has an opportunity to contribute significantly to this growth. \nUKTI will be organising a mission in August to enable UK companies to investigate and pursue opportunities in China. \nThis mission is open to UK Life Sciences companies interested\, but new to China\, as well as those with existing experience of the China market. \nDay 1 – 4: Beijing Hospeq 2016 Exhibition (18 – 21 August) \nBeijing Hospeq is a large and influential medical equipment exhibition in\nChina\, supported by the Chinese government. It is organised by the International Health Exchange Cooperation Centre (IHECC) of the National Health and Family Planning Commission (NHFPC). The IHECC is responsible for national centralised procurement of large medical equipment. \nIn addition to IHECC\, over 20\,000 Chinese buyers will attend Hospeq from business and healthcare organisations. Participants will have the opportunity to meet distributors and buyers\, scope opportunities and understand the competition\, meet with experienced UK companies and develop an understanding of the challenges of the Chinese market. \nChina Food Drug Administration (CFDA) Workshop – (20 August)\nCompanies are invited to attend a workshop run by the China Food and Drug Administration (CFDA) – the national regulatory authority – for a detailed briefing on Chinese registration and regulatory requirements. \nUKTI support at Hospeq \nUKTI will provide a free UK Pavilion for up to eight UK companies to exhibit. The main themes of the stand will be\, but are not restricted to\, Orthopaedics\, ICU and ER equipment\, and Imaging (chosen for their relevance to the audience). The aim of the UK Pavilion is to showcase UK excellence in Life Sciences and as such the selected companies will constitute the best presentation of UK expertise. If oversubscribed\, companies who are not selected will be invited to join the mission\, but will be required to pay the cost of a stand on the edge of the UK Pavilion. \nCompanies will also have free access to exhibit in the Innovation Zone. The Innovation Zone will focus on cutting-edge medical technology products\, medical robot\, 3D printing and virtual reality. The Innovation Zone will provide the ideal platform for cutting edge companies seeking investment or partnering opportunities. \nDay 5 – 6: Medical Devices Commercial Dialogue in Shandong Province (22 – 23 August) \nShandong Province has a population of 97 million (larger than the UK) and is one of the wealthiest of the 17 provinces of China. The UK has been invited by the provincial government to showcase UK companies in a dialogue that will include opportunities to present products; match with partnering companies\, distributors and buyers; and meet with local government to understand the complexities of entering the Chinese market and discover the type of support that is available. \nThe Shandong trip will also provide an opportunity to present to a UK company managing public hospitals in China. This company is seeking to upgrade and upskill using a UK supply chain. Companies will meet hospital management representatives to promote their products. \nDay 7: Beijing Closing Workshop (24 August) \nCosts \nCompanies will need to budget for return flights; internal train transfers; accommodation; and most meals. Participants should allow £100 per night to cover hotels\, which will be block booked in advance. Translation services will be provided for the Shandong leg of the mission\, however companies are advised to make their own arrangements for Hospeq\, including having their materials translated. The UKTI China office can advise on local translators and printing companies. \nTo register\, please contact John Lownds 020 7215 8086 before Monday 13th June \nThere may also be Welsh Government trade support available. Please contact Ceri Edwards for more information.
