SUMMARY:Innovate UK: Protecting Data in Industry Briefing - Cardiff
DESCRIPTION:Innovate UK is to invest up to £4 million in collaborative research and development (R&D) projects that tackle the growing risks of disruption to internet-enabled businesses and their digital supply chains. \nWith the Internet of Things providing new sources of data and end-users’ ever-increasing digital footprint\, it is difficult to adequately protect the interests of a business\, industry or sector. There is also a lack of understanding of the effects disruption may have. \nAttend the briefing event in Cardiff on 30th March 2015 \nDesired proposals would address the challenge of protecting a business\, industry or sector from digital disruption that could compromise data across the digital supply chain. \nInnovate UK want to identify and fund industrial research that will strengthen the protection and resilience of such data\, so businesses and the public can place higher levels of confidence in the delivery of digitally enabled business products and services. \nVisit the funding competition page for details \nApplications: Proposals must be collaborative and led by a business. We expect to fund mainly industrial research projects in which a business partner will generally attract up to 50% public funding for their project costs (60% for SMEs). \nInnovate UK expect projects to range in size from total costs of £150\,000 to £750\,000\, although they may consider projects outside this range. \nKey Dates \nRegistration deadline – noon 29 April 2015\nExpressions of interest deadline – noon 6 May 2015\nStage 2 opens for invited applicants – 26 May 2015\nDeadline for invited applications – noon 25 June 2015

SUMMARY:Webinar with Aber Instruments & BEACON
DESCRIPTION:Monitoring Biomass Deconstruction in Real-Time for the Production of Bio-Fuels and Platform \nThis Webinar will be presented by Dr David Bryant\, BEACON Co-Investigator based at the Institute of Biological\, Environmental & Rural Sciences (IBERS)\, Aberystwyth University. \nGrowing concern over environmental change has led to efforts to reduce petrochemical dependency and mitigate climate change through the development of sustainable bio-based processes for the production of renewable fuels and chemicals. Lignocellulosic biomass\, the woody material of plants\, is an abundant feedstock that offers a source of non-food carbohydrates for bioconversion to liquid fuels (e.g. bioethanol) or platform chemicals (e.g. lactic acid) in addition to the potential of phenolic based products (e.g. bio-polymers) being produced from lignin. However\, in order to release the carbohydrates for fermentation\, the biomass must first undergo pretreatment to render the biomatrix accessible to hydrolysing enzymes and secondly\, undergo hydrolysis by these enzymes. Analytical systems for monitoring this deconstruction process by hydrolytic enzymes (saccharification) are both off-line and time consuming. \nWorking in collaboration with Aber Instruments (AI)\, BEACON and IBERS have demonstrated the utility of the Biomass Probe to monitor in ‘real-time’ the enzymatic release of carbohydrates from biomass following pre-treatments such as steam explosion. Furthermore\, we have shown that the AI biomass probe is capable of following this saccharification process during simultaneous fermentation to lactic acid. Traditionally used for strictly monitoring the accumulation of biomass in industrial scale brewing processes\, the application of AI’s biomass probe technology to the breakdown of lignocelluosic biomass demonstrates utility in the growing bio-renewable industrial sectors. \nClick here to register\nFor more information please contact Eifion Loosley
