The talk covers advances in computing power\, machine learning and data analytics of information technology systems and show how these have accelerated the convergence of science and surgery. Lord Darzi will outline an era that is aiming to bypass ‘one size fits all’ treatments and instead offer diagnostics\, treatments and preventative health interventions that are precisely adapted to our innate human variability. \nThe event is the second of Cardiff University’s Home of Innovation lectures. \nLord Darzi holds the Paul Hamlyn Chair of Surgery at Imperial College London\, the Royal Marsden Hospital and the Institute of Cancer Research. He is Director of the Institute of Global Health Innovation at Imperial College London and an Honorary Consultant Surgeon at Imperial College Hospital NHS Trust. \nLeading research aimed at achieving best surgical practice through innovation in surgery and enhancing patient safety and the quality of healthcare\, Professor Darzi has published over 950 peer-reviewed papers. DESCRIPTION:Celtic Connection brings together Life Sciences experience from Wales and Ireland\, as well as leading experts\, academics\, investors and advisors. It will enable businesses from across Wales and Ireland to learn more about trading in these two regions and explore potential for increasing trade\, growth and routes to market. \nDuring the morning session public and private support organisations will lay out what help is available to address the known challenges and opportunities that exist in the sector.  The focus will be on identifying the strengths and potential of Welsh/Irish collaboration. \nThe afternoon concentrates on specific key challenges\, accompanied by real case studies offered by experienced companies who have already trodden that path. There will be two interactive panel sessions on Intellectual Property and Funding. These will consist of a short introduction from an expert in each field from both Wales and Ireland\, followed by a relevant case study from each country and then open discussion and questions. DESCRIPTION:Background \nDuring a visit by ABPI Executive Director of Research\, Medical and Innovation Dr Virginia Acha\, to Cardiff last year she met with Professor Julie Williams\, Welsh Government Chief Scientific Advisor (CSA).
