SUMMARY:Wales Festival of Innovation: MediWales & KTN - The Bionic Clinician
DESCRIPTION:Delivered by MediWales and KTN\, ‘The Bionic Clinician’ takes place on 19th June at Novotel\, Cardiff as part of the Wales Festival of Innovation \nClick here to view the event flyer \nThe event explores the increase in the ‘man-machine interaction’ in healthcare delivery\, and will be chaired by Dr R Ramanan\, a clinician\, cardiac surgeon\, professor associated with bioengineering and the MD of Innovative Solutions in Informatics (ISIS) Ltd. \nLooking back at developments since he qualified as a clinician in the seventies\, when doctors relied on their stethoscope and their instinct\, Dr Ramanan reflects on how technology has transformed the way that we practice and deliver healthcare. \nLaboratory tests were a feat of labour and manual dexterity\, extremely time-consuming and tedious. Most of the things we take for granted today – CTs\, MRIs\, ultrasound\, echocardiography\, PET scans\, high-power computing\, digital data\, lab-on-a-chip\, artificial intelligence\, and the cloud were not designed\, discovered\, or developed. \nThe 21st century clinician is inextricably linked to and dependent on technology to deliver care that is safe and standardised. As the boundary between the clinician and technology become increasingly blurred\, this event predicts a future whereby the clinician becomes truly bionic. \nProgramme: \n\n9.00am – 9.30am Registration\n9.30am – 9.40am Gwyn Tudor\, CEO\, MediWales\, Welcome\n9.40am – 10.05am Professor Rams Ramanan\, Clinician\, Cardiac Surgeon\, Professor associated with Brunel Institute for Bioengineering\, and Director of Innovative Solutions in Informatics Ltd\, Bionic Clinician\, The Man-Machine Interface\n10.05am – 10.30am Ian Risk\, VP\, Head of Airbus Group Innovations UK\, Flying by association\, Healthcare & Aviation\n10.30am – 10.55am Paul Thomas\, Enterprise Architect\, Microsoft\, The Connected Body\n10.55am – 11.20am Morning break with technology demonstrations\n11.20am – 11.45am Eugene Butans\, Department of Advanced Engineering\, Integrated Vehicle Health Management (IVHM)\, Optimal Health\n11.45am – 12.00pm Chris Sawyer\, Lead Technologist\, Health & Care\, Innovate UK\, Everything you wanted to know about… but were afraid to ask\n12.00pm – 12.20pm Sarb Sembhi\, Director\, STORM Guidance\, ‘Don’t be scared\, be very afraid’ or should you? SUMMARY:PCI: Too Hard To Handle - EU Clinical Trials Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Join PCI for a complimentary educational lunch event \nThe face of clinical trials is constantly changing with more challenges for drug developers than ever. Two core themes define this\, new and evolving technologies\, and more difficult disease targets. \nCompounds for these targets tend to be riskier to develop and more expensive to produce. With this in mind the “too hard to handle” seminar will address the complexities of moving these compounds through the supply chain safely and efficiently whilst reducing uncertainty and cost. \nThe programme includes: \nHow Hard is Hard? \nExamining the complexities of taking these ‘hard to handle’ molecules through the manufacturing process including; the changing pharmaceutical landscape and the molecules considered “potent”\, The Occupational Exposure Limit (OEL) assessment of potency\, the latest internationally recognised guidelines the handling of potent molecules and the state of the art equipment that ensures adherence to best practice through contained processing. \nTurning Challenge Into Opportunity \nAs todays early phase drug compounds and chemical structures become reliant upon stringent storage\, atmospherically and temperature controlled conditions\, PCI looks at some of today’s complex packaging challenges including the challenges in monitoring or maintaining low humidity\, Nitrogen flushing\, the practical challenges of packaging in refrigerated environments as well as the complex logistics of packaging Controlled Substances. \nClinical Trial QP Challenges; Practical examples from the real world \nJoin PCI for an overview of the challenges facing the QP as they look to assure a robust and efficient supply chain. Furthermore the QP acts as the regulatory gate keeper to ensure that product certified is in full compliance with EU directives and regulations. During this presentation\, we will examine specific scenarios where PCI QPs have has to overcome challenging scenarios to ensure drug product availability to clinical trials has not been compromised. \nIt’s a Small World \nAt a time when supply chain integrity is receiving unprecedented interest from regulatory authorities World Courier considers the implications of a truly global supply chain\, accessing the emerging markets\, handling dangerous goods and ensuring GXP compliance through risk assessment and effective temperature control. \nClick here to register \nVisit the PCI profile here

SUMMARY:SBRI funded competition for Stratified Medicine - workshop
DESCRIPTION:Innovate UK and other partners are to invest up to £10m in an SBRI funded competition to develop biomarker-based Stratified Medicine approaches such as diagnostic tests and analytical algorithms that are capable of stratifying patients for different clinical treatments available in the UK.   \nA workshop to discuss the competition is due to take place on Thursday\, 2 July 2015 from 10:00 to 15:00 hrs at the Life Sciences Hub Cardiff. \nRegister here to attend the Cardiff meeting \nInnovate UK’s Stratified Medicine Innovation Platform (SMIP)\, along with its partners in the public and third sector\, aims to maximise the potential of stratified medicine in the UK for the benefit of the patients and the economy.  Stratified medicine will provide early and accurate diagnosis and identify the best treatment and disease management for patients. This is of key importance in the treatment of diseases such as cancer\, infection\, respiratory and inflammatory disease\, musculoskeletal disease and dementia. \nThe adoption of new innovations by healthcare providers has been identified as a challenge to the growth of stratified medicine. Defining the value of the product to the healthcare provider and provision of relevant evidence to support this claim is necessary to enable the adoption of diagnostic testing.  Since inception\, SMIP and its partners have created new enabling organisations within the UK\, for example the Diagnostic Evidence Cooperatives\, Academic Health Science Networks\, Precision Medicine Catapult\, NICE\, Translational partnerships or similar groups in the devolved governments. \nInnovate UK and other partners are to invest up to £10m in an SBRI funded competition to develop biomarker-based Stratified Medicine approaches such as diagnostic tests and analytical algorithms that are capable of stratifying patients for different clinical treatments available in the UK.   The aim is to develop and commercialise innovative diagnostic tests by engaging with the organisations within the UK  stratified medicine infrastructure to accelerate the pathway from concept to adoption. \nAs part of this the KTN intends to run 4 workshops to discuss the competition and allow companies the opportunity to interact with other companies and representatives from relevant parties within the UK infrastructure to build future partnerships.
