SUMMARY:SBRI funded competition for Stratified Medicine - workshop
DESCRIPTION:Innovate UK and other partners are to invest up to £10m in an SBRI funded competition to develop biomarker-based Stratified Medicine approaches such as diagnostic tests and analytical algorithms that are capable of stratifying patients for different clinical treatments available in the UK.   \nA workshop to discuss the competition is due to take place on Thursday\, 2 July 2015 from 10:00 to 15:00 hrs at the Life Sciences Hub Cardiff. \nRegister here to attend the Cardiff meeting \nInnovate UK’s Stratified Medicine Innovation Platform (SMIP)\, along with its partners in the public and third sector\, aims to maximise the potential of stratified medicine in the UK for the benefit of the patients and the economy.  Stratified medicine will provide early and accurate diagnosis and identify the best treatment and disease management for patients. This is of key importance in the treatment of diseases such as cancer\, infection\, respiratory and inflammatory disease\, musculoskeletal disease and dementia. \nThe adoption of new innovations by healthcare providers has been identified as a challenge to the growth of stratified medicine. Defining the value of the product to the healthcare provider and provision of relevant evidence to support this claim is necessary to enable the adoption of diagnostic testing.  Since inception\, SMIP and its partners have created new enabling organisations within the UK\, for example the Diagnostic Evidence Cooperatives\, Academic Health Science Networks\, Precision Medicine Catapult\, NICE\, Translational partnerships or similar groups in the devolved governments. \nInnovate UK and other partners are to invest up to £10m in an SBRI funded competition to develop biomarker-based Stratified Medicine approaches such as diagnostic tests and analytical algorithms that are capable of stratifying patients for different clinical treatments available in the UK.   The aim is to develop and commercialise innovative diagnostic tests by engaging with the organisations within the UK  stratified medicine infrastructure to accelerate the pathway from concept to adoption. \nAs part of this the KTN intends to run 4 workshops to discuss the competition and allow companies the opportunity to interact with other companies and representatives from relevant parties within the UK infrastructure to build future partnerships.

The principal market a project must consider is Mexico. \nProjects must be collaborative\, involving both UK and Mexican participants. On the UK side\, projects must be business-led\, and can involve other non-business partners. \nInnovate UK and CONACYT are running parallel application processes under this competition. DESCRIPTION:Expand your network\, meet and chat with fellow IOT/IOE-ists over the NVI Network \nFirst we had the Internet of Things (IOT) – the connection of physical objects or “things” to the internet: smartphones\, tablets\, alarm clocks\, toasters;  now we have the tsunami that is the ‘Internet of Everything’  (IOE)\,  the connection of people\, processes\, data and objects to the internet\, adding incremental value and transforming things at a holistic level i.e. smart cities.  So having a sensor in a recycling bin helps to connect the bin (IOT) but having that as part of a broader smart network that helps to connect information from that bin to recycling plants which is then used to determine collection routes for recycling vans across a city that can be updated in real time.  The magnitude of the opportunity here is huge! \nWe’d love to hear what opportunities and challenges IOE presents for YOU!  There is a massive community of like-minded folks working in the IOT/IOE space out there… here’s the opportunity to talk to some of your peers from across the UK. \nWhat tips can you give each other? These technologies underpin ‘smart’ services that have a transformative effect on society\, particularly in the urban environment\, allowing cities better to meet the needs of citizens. \nThe Department for Culture\, Media and Sport (DCMS) is to invest up to £10 million* in a single collaborative R&D project to demonstrate the capability of the Internet of Things (IoT) in a city region. This competition (delivered by Innovate UK on behalf of DCMS) is part of a wider £40 million government investment in IoT announced in March 2015. \nThe aim of this demonstrator is to show how the large-scale deployment of IoT – where everyday objects are connected to a network in order to share their data – can benefit citizens by offering environmental improvements\, economic opportunities\, and more efficient and effective delivery of services such as transport\, healthcare and energy. \nProjects must be collaborative and led by a local authority or local enterprise partnership (or an equivalent body outside England). The conference will take place between 9am and 4pm at the Reichel Conference Centre\, Bangor University. \nThe conference is intended to be an opportunity to: \n\nShowcase the high quality research taking place in the University and the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board.\nProvide an environment for discussion and exploring research interests and capacities in both organisation.\nBetter understand the established links various research teams have with researchers across and outside the region.\n\nThe conference will include plenary sessions to offer sector context but is being primarily shaped around an opportunity for researchers to present papers on their current research and future plans and will be supplemented by a poster conference. The figures are staggering with 1 in 8 mums dying of childbirth related diseases over a lifetime\, as risk accumulates.  Imagine if your mum had died in childbirth.  Funds raised from this event will help us build a Primary School in Shiyala Zambia\, to help educate tomorrow’s mums. \nUK Sepsis Trust: Sepsis is a life threatening condition that arises when the body’s response to an infection injures its own tissues and organs. Sepsis leads to shock\, multiple organ failure and death especially if not recognized early and treated promptly.  Unfortunately\, lots of people do not survive with Sepsis being one of our biggest killers both in Wales\, UK and the Developing World! Shocking\, since so few people are aware of it\, but sepsis claims 37\,000 lives every year in the UK and costs the NHS £2.5 billion a year.
