Micro-organisms are integral to our health and wellbeing. There are still questions as to where we are heading in terms of the UK-EU relationship. This poses a number of challenges for businesses that are dependent on cross border trade with the EU\, and require an understanding of what measures can be taken to keep goods moving across the border\, in the event of a No Deal Brexit. DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to announce that Professor Anne Lingford-Hughes\, will be delivering our annual Raymond and Beverly Sackler Distinguished Lecture in Neuroscience\, established in honour of Professor Sir Keith Peters. \nAll drugs of abuse alter brain function\, but how do they do this\, what makes someone vulnerable to addiction and are any changes enduring? This lecture will describe how brain imaging has enabled us to investigate the impact of different drugs of abuse on the brain and how this knowledge helps us develop better prevention and treatment strategies. \nProfessor Anne Lingford-Hughes leads the Centre for Psychiatry and Addiction Biology at Imperial College London. She is also a Consultant Psychiatrist with a particular interest in pharmacological treatments of alcohol problems and other substance addictions at Central North West London NHS Foundation Trust. Her research has focused on using neuroimaging and neuropharmacological challenges to characterize the neurobiology of addiction. DESCRIPTION:Dr Gordon Sanghera started his higher education in Cardiff\, where his chemistry degree was a solid foundation for a PhD in bioelectronics at Cardiff with Prof JDR Thomas\, and subsequently a career in the business of marrying biology\, chemistry and electronics to create innovative breakthroughs in blood glucose sensing and DNA analysis. \nGordon along with Hagan Bayley and IP Group was co-founder of Oxford Nanopore. He was appointed CEO in June 2005. Oxford Nanopore aims to enable the analysis of any living thing\, by any person\, in any environment.  The Company’s first device\, the MinION\, is the only portable\, real time DNA/RNA sequencer. In use in more than 70 countries\, it is being used in the analysis of pathogens\, human disease\, crop science and environmental surveillance. The MinION is even being used to perform microbiology experiments on the international space station. \nOxford Nanopore now has more than 350 employees from multiple disciplines including nanopore science\, molecular biology and applications\, informatics\, engineering\, electronics\, manufacturing and commercialisation.
