SUMMARY:Hackable Medical Devices: Fact or Fiction?
DESCRIPTION:Hackable Medical Devices: Fact or Fiction? \nOrganised in collaboration with Techealth and Software Alliance Wales  \nIt’s the kind of topic which belongs in an American political thriller\, but medical devices have entered the zeitgeist as a new security target\, and malicious interference with devices – such as pacemakers and infusion pumps – is a real threat\, and one which is gaining a significant amount of global attention of late. \nThe US Department of Homeland Security are taking the threat very seriously\, stating that injury or death as a result from hacking is within the realms of possibility. \nIn theory it is possible to remotely influence an infusion pump’s dispense rate – transforming a reservoir of insulin into a potential lethal weapon. And so what about implantable medical devices that use wireless communication\, such as pacemakers – could these be maliciously hacked to threaten patients’ lives? \n  \nSpeaker’s Biography: \nKevin Fu is Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Michigan where he directs the Archimedes Research Center for Medical Device Security and the Security and Privacy Research (SPQR) group. His research investigates how to achieve trustworthy computing on embedded devices with application to health care\, commerce\, and communication. His participation in the provocative 2008 research paper analyzing the security of a pacemaker/defibrillator led to a watershed moment in cybersecurity for medical device manufacturing and regulatory science. \nProf. Fu received his Ph.D. in EECS from MIT where his doctoral research pertained to secure storage and web authentication. He received a Sloan Research Fellowship\, NSF CAREER award\, Fed100 Award\, and best paper awards from various academic silos of computing. The research is featured in critical articles by the NYT\, WSJ\, and NPR. Kevin was named MIT Technology Review TR35 Innovator of the Year for work on medical device security. He has testified in Congress on health matters and has written commissioned work for the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies. He served as a visiting scientist at the Food & Drug Administration\, the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center of Harvard Medical School\, Microsoft Research\, and MIT CSAIL. Previous employers include Bellcore\, Cisco Systems\, HP Labs\, and Holland Community Hospital. Kevin is a member of the ACM Committee on Computers and Public Policy and the NIST Information Security and Privacy Advisory Board. He is a principal investigator of THaW.org. Prior to joining Michigan\, he served on the faculty at UMass Amherst. Kevin also holds a certificate of achievement in artisanal bread making from the French Culinary Institute. \n \nRegistration: \nThis continues a series of Distinguished Lectures in Computer Science at Swansea University. Refreshments available in the foyer from 3.30pm. The event is free of charge and open to all\, and followed by a reception. Registration to attend is required: www.softwarealliancewales.com/cyber-security \nFor further information\, contact Professor Peter Mosses\, coordinator of the Swansea University Distinguished Lectures in Computer Science (P.D.Mosses@swansea.ac.uk). Details of all the lectures in this series are available online at www.swansea.ac.uk/compsci/distinguishedlectures

SUMMARY:Launch of 'Think about Me': Good Care Guide
DESCRIPTION:Launch of ‘Think about Me’: Good Care Guide \n“Think About Me”: Good Care Guide is a local web based feedback system where residents and relatives can rate and review care homes. \nThis development has been driven by relatives of older people already living in care homes. They believe that at a time when people have to make a difficult decision about choosing a care home\, they should be able to see ‘real time’ feedback from people living there (or their relatives) to help them make a choice. It’s hoped that by sharing views about care providers – from the quality of care and staff to the facilities\, surroundings and of course value for money – it will help people find and choose the right care for their family. \n“Think About Me”: Good Care Guide invites residents and relatives to share their experiences with other families looking for local care homes to help them make a much more informed decision. \nWe are launching this exciting initiative on the 9th of March 2015.  Why not come along to hear more about it and see how it works? \nClick here to register \nMore about the event: \nThere is a specific need for feedback from residents and family of those living in care\, residential or nursing homes. Currently when older people need to make a very difficult decision there is an absence of ‘real time’ information about care homes. Working with the Good Care Guide we are launching a pilot of “Think About Me” which will allow people to find\, rate and review elderlycare in Gwent. \nAbout South East Wales Academic Health Science Partnership: \nThe South East Wales Academic Health Science Partnership (SEWAHSP) is an alliance with a mission to cooperate and collaborate strategically and operationally\, to integrate high quality research and education and enhance the Region’s outputs in developing and applying improvements\, innovations and health technologies to benefit the health and wealth of the population of Wales.

SUMMARY:ABHI: eProcurement Conference
DESCRIPTION:The NHS eProcurement Strategy\, published in May 2014\, aims to transform how the NHS improves patient care through a modern\, effective and efficient NHS procurement function. \nDemand for NHS services is growing\, but NHS funding is not keeping pace. NHS trusts are being challenged to operate more efficiently. A step in doing so is to improve NHS procurement\, particularly to undertake NHS purchase-to-pay transactions and all category management activities by electronic means. \nThe benefits of doing so include provision of higher quality data for information sharing\, time saving automated transactions\, reduced costs and enhanced services between customer and supplier. Achieving these benefits will mean changing the way the NHS works with its suppliers\, moving to a standard coding (GS1) to identify products\, a common electronic language for exchanging information\, and greater technical infrastructure. \nThis Conference is an opportunity for all suppliers to the NHS to understand how the NHS eProcurement Strategy will impact their business. \nThe objective is to provide information on the: \n\nSuppliers Guidelines to be published by DH\nLatest updates in the strategy’s implementation plan\nNecessary steps to enable compliance\nActions local trusts are taking\n\nKey Speakers will present the objectives of the strategy and the route forward towards implementation. Discussions will cover the challenges to be overcome and examples of how industry can move in the right direction. The programme will include speakers from: \n\nDepartment of Health\nNHS Trusts\nGS1 UK\nSolutions providers\n\nWho should attend \nManagers responsible for the implementation of the eProcurement strategy including \n\nSupply chain Managers\nCustomer Service Managers\neProcurement Specialists\nContract Managers\nPurchase to Pay Managers\nCategory Managers\n\nClick here for the programme \nFor more information about this conference or other events please contact: \nJane Sessenwein\, Manager\, International & Events\n+44 (0)20 7960 4380\njane.sessenwein@abhi.org.uk   \nLiz Hatter\, Manager\, International & Events\n+44 (0)20 7960 4368\nliz.hatter@abhi.org.uk

SUMMARY:The Long-Term Care Revolution - Wales Roadshow
DESCRIPTION:The Long-Term Care Revolution – Wales Roadshow \nInnovate UK and the Welsh Government are delighted to be working in partnership on the The Long Term Care Revolution to highlight the scale of the business opportunity which new approaches to long-term care provision have to offer. \nBy acting as catalysts\, Innovate UK and the Welsh Government are encouraging a broad spectrum of innovators across the UK\, including entrepreneurial businesses and academics focused on innovation and translation of research\, to come up with innovative products\, services and systems to revolutionise long term care. This will mean that for the first time people can enjoy the same level of choice over how they live with long term care requirements\, as they do in other aspects of their lives. \nThis roadshow will bring together a broad spectrum of attendees from; \n\nSME’s\nEntrenpeuners\nAcademia\nTrade associations & Institutions\nResearch Councils\nAnd many more\n\nThis is not your usual event. \nAttendees should expect to be stimulated\, challenged and asked to participate by contributing their own views\, challenges and perspectives. \nWhat is the Long Term Care Revolution? \nThe Long Term Care Revolution is a programme developed by Innovate UK to stimulate innovation to create alternatives to the institutional model of long term care in the UK\, which is no longer fit for purpose. It is ambitious. \nThe objective is to stimulate innovation that will disrupt the long term care institutional model\, turning long term care from an economic liability to one with significant wealth creation potential. \nThe vision is to replace institutional long term care provision with alternatives that have the potential for real commercial value in the UK\, and which sustain the rights\, dignity and whole life experience of UK citizens by 2050. \nThe goal is to create a range of diverse\, vibrant and cutting-edge non-institutionalised products\, services and systems addressing the lifestyle and health needs and aspirations of individuals requiring high level care and support. Lifestyle care and support options that are fit for purpose\, sustainable\, desirable and reflect 21st century advances. \nThe Long Term Care Revolution SBRI competition opening in April 2015\, will give the UK’s brightest and most talented entrepreneurs\, SMEs and academics\, the opportunity to compete for funding from a £4 million budget pot to kick-start the development of their business idea. \nWho do we want to attract? \nWe want to overturn conventional thinking and ideologies about long term care\, in order to unlock the growth potential for UK businesses and the economy. We are therefore looking to work with agile businesses\, academics and organisations across the UK. We especially wish to attract SMEs\, entrepreneurs and academics from sectors which do not usually operate in the health and social care space (eg. architecture\, space\, energy\, design\, robotics and autonomous systems\, photonics\, sensors and lighting\, advanced materials\, gaming\, aviation\, etc). We are also keen to attract businesses in financial services\, long term care providers\, housing providers\, retailers\, CCGs\, LEPS and Local Authorities. \nWhats on offer? \nInnovate UK will be investing £4m over a period of up to 24 months in successful projects. This is an SBRI competition which means that projects will be 100% fully funded. \nWhat is the timeline? \nThe Long Term Care Revolution opens on the 6th April 2015 and closes on the 2nd September 2015. Successful projects are expected to commence on the 2nd January 2016. \nHow can I get involved? \nYou get involved by following us on \n_connect at https://connect.innovateuk.org/web/the-long-term-care-revolution/about-us \nTwitter using #LTCRevolution \nFacebook at https://www.facebook.com/TheLongtermcarerevolution  \nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER

SUMMARY:Cybersecurity in medical devices
DESCRIPTION:“We are aware of hundreds of medical devices that have been infected by malware or dangerous computer software”\, said Bill Maisel of the US FDA. \nMedical devices\, like other computer systems\, can be vulnerable to security breaches\, potentially impacting the safety and effectiveness of the device. This vulnerability increases as medical devices are increasingly “connected” to the Internet\, hospital networks\, and to other medical devices. \nSome examples of recently highlighted vulnerabilities: \n\nMalware at one point slowed down fetal monitors used on women with high-risk pregnancies being treated in intensive-care wards.\nA virus caused a device to potentially expose sensitive patient information by sending it to outside servers.\nA catheterization laboratory was temporarily closed because malware had infected computer equipment needed for procedures to open blocked arteries.\nDrug infusion pumps remotely manipulated to change the dosage delivered to patients;\nWireless implanted cardioverter-defibrillators maliciously programmed to deliver unnecessary and potentially fatal shocks or to prevent a shock from occurring when it was needed;\nTemperature settings on blood storage refrigerators reset; and\nElectronic health records altered in such a way as to cause doctors to misdiagnose conditions and prescribe the wrong treatments.\n\nSome of these examples have occurred in clinical use and others in “ethical hacking” studies. In the United States\, the FDA expects “medical device manufacturers to take appropriate steps to limit the opportunities for unauthorized access to medical devices. Specifically\, we recommend that manufacturers review their cybersecurity practices and policies to assure that appropriate safeguards are in place to prevent unauthorized access or modification to their medical devices or compromise of the security of the hospital network that may be connected to the device”. Worldwide\, medical device regulators are expecting the industry to address the various cybersecurity threats in all their forms. \nCybersecurity in Medical Devices – An advanced one day training programme \nBy attending this one day event you will gain specialised knowledge about the nature of cybersecurity threats\, the array of tools and technologies available to hackers and the risk to patients and your business. We will equip you with state-of-the-art knowledge on how to effectively deal with the threat throughout the development lifecycle through both effective preventive measures and detection techniques. \nRegister here

There is also a lack of understanding of the effects disruption may have. \nAttend the briefing event in Cardiff on 30th March 2015 \nDesired proposals would address the challenge of protecting a business\, industry or sector from digital disruption that could compromise data across the digital supply chain. \nInnovate UK want to identify and fund industrial research that will strengthen the protection and resilience of such data\, so businesses and the public can place higher levels of confidence in the delivery of digitally enabled business products and services. \nVisit the funding competition page for details \nApplications: Proposals must be collaborative and led by a business. We expect to fund mainly industrial research projects in which a business partner will generally attract up to 50% public funding for their project costs (60% for SMEs). \nInnovate UK expect projects to range in size from total costs of £150\,000 to £750\,000\, although they may consider projects outside this range. \nKey Dates \nRegistration deadline – noon 29 April 2015\nExpressions of interest deadline – noon 6 May 2015\nStage 2 opens for invited applicants – 26 May 2015\nDeadline for invited applications – noon 25 June 2015

SUMMARY:Webinar with Aber Instruments & BEACON
DESCRIPTION:Monitoring Biomass Deconstruction in Real-Time for the Production of Bio-Fuels and Platform \nThis Webinar will be presented by Dr David Bryant\, BEACON Co-Investigator based at the Institute of Biological\, Environmental & Rural Sciences (IBERS)\, Aberystwyth University. \nGrowing concern over environmental change has led to efforts to reduce petrochemical dependency and mitigate climate change through the development of sustainable bio-based processes for the production of renewable fuels and chemicals. Lignocellulosic biomass\, the woody material of plants\, is an abundant feedstock that offers a source of non-food carbohydrates for bioconversion to liquid fuels (e.g. bioethanol) or platform chemicals (e.g. lactic acid) in addition to the potential of phenolic based products (e.g. bio-polymers) being produced from lignin. However\, in order to release the carbohydrates for fermentation\, the biomass must first undergo pretreatment to render the biomatrix accessible to hydrolysing enzymes and secondly\, undergo hydrolysis by these enzymes. Analytical systems for monitoring this deconstruction process by hydrolytic enzymes (saccharification) are both off-line and time consuming. \nWorking in collaboration with Aber Instruments (AI)\, BEACON and IBERS have demonstrated the utility of the Biomass Probe to monitor in ‘real-time’ the enzymatic release of carbohydrates from biomass following pre-treatments such as steam explosion. Furthermore\, we have shown that the AI biomass probe is capable of following this saccharification process during simultaneous fermentation to lactic acid. Traditionally used for strictly monitoring the accumulation of biomass in industrial scale brewing processes\, the application of AI’s biomass probe technology to the breakdown of lignocelluosic biomass demonstrates utility in the growing bio-renewable industrial sectors. \nClick here to register\nFor more information please contact Eifion Loosley
