Health and Care Research Wales aims to invest up to £3m into a new Welsh Adult Social Care Research Centre

Health and Care Research Wales has opened a funding call looking for a Higher Education Institute (HEI) to create and co-fund a new Centre for Adult Social Care Research.

Adult social care research, a focus for Health and Care Research Wales, aims to tackle issues such as ageing population and an increase in demand for social care.

Health and Care Research Wales will provide up to £3m over five years, funding staff posts to support and develop a research centre which will secure national and international research funding and contribute to the development of adult social care policy and practice in Wales.

The successful HEI is expected to provide co-funding during the initial five-year period, and to have a sustainable plan for funding the posts beyond the term of Health and Care Research Wales investment.

Michael Bowdery, Head of Programmes at Health and Care Research Wales, said:

Social care plays a vital role in supporting some of the most vulnerable people in our communities as well as our health service. Adult social care research capacity in Wales remains limited and has arguably declined in recent years. This limited capacity has left Wales poorly placed to take advantage of related major funding opportunities.

We have been working with local authorities and other partners to identify the additional resources needed to meet the extra demands on adult social care services. We expect the new Centre for Adult Social Care Research will boost the capacity in adult social care research and benefit policy and practice development in Wales.”

The Centre for Adult Social Care Research brief and expression of interest form can be found on the Health and Care Research Wales website.

Application deadline: 17:00 on 20 September 2022
