Help the FAMILIAR Study improve family planning care for people living with inflammatory arthritis

Zoë Abbott, a researcher from Cardiff University, would like to invite you to take part in the FAMILIAR Study to help researchers understand how individuals of childbearing age are supported to make decisions about family planning when they live with autoimmune inflammatory arthritis.

Family planning in this study includes thinking about having a baby, actively planning to have a baby or avoiding an unplanned pregnancy.

The “FAMILIAR Study: Interviews” project is looking to understand how affected individuals experience family planning care in rheumatology and primary care settings to help identify what, if anything, needs to be improved.

The study is looking to recruit these types of people:

  • women / those assigned female at birth (AFAB), aged 18-50 who have a diagnosis of inflammatory arthritis (rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, juvenile idiopathic arthritis or lupus), who are under NHS care
  • members of NHS staff who provide care to women with inflammatory arthritis of childbearing potential and do or could have conversations about family planning

The aim is to collect the experiences and perspectives of the people described above to develop a way to improve these important conversations about family planning in the future. The researchers want the patients to make their choices with the best possible information, be happy with their choices, and safer when making them.

Taking part will involve one interview, lasting approximately one hour. The interview will be arranged at a time which suits you best and can be conducted over the telephone, online or in person depending on your availability and preference.
