Firm wins £130m contract for hospital refurbishment

Interserve Construction has won a £130m contract to refurbish the Prince Charles Hospital in Merthyr Tydfil, with work set to start this month.

The major contract, awarded by the Welsh Government, will include renovations to the ground and first floors of the hospital and follows a number of new business wins for Interserve across the healthcare space.

The aim of the project will be to improve patient care and the working environment for staff by creating a more modern and efficient healthcare setting.

Work is set to begin in November and is forecast to be completed in 2026. During this time the hospital will remain operational.

Among the departments set to benefit from the refurbishment are operating theatres, critical care, radiology and outpatients’ services.

Paul Gandy, managing director of UK Construction at Interserve, said: “We are delighted to be involved in this major project which illustrates Interserve Construction’s expertise in the healthcare delivery sector.

“Our excellent track record in delivering projects similar in nature to this one, means we are now considered one of the country’s leading construction companies for healthcare projects and we look forward to starting work and creating a modern and efficient hospital for the people of Merthyr Tydfil and beyond.”

Carl Read, divisional director at Interserve Construction in Wales, added: “We are committed to providing social value and will be working with the local community to ensure employment opportunities and apprenticeships are created throughout the life-time of this project.”

Interserve will be working with project partners to create apprenticeships for people involved in the refurbishment, boosting the local economy and jobs market.

Health minister Vaughan Gething said: “This is a substantial investment which will enhance patient care and the working environment at the hospital.

“The hospital provides vital care for the Cwm Taf Morgannwg area and beyond, especially for a number of residents of Powys.”

Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board chief executive Paul Mears said: “The redevelopment of Prince Charles Hospital is a key priority for the health board in ensuring we can deliver high-quality care for the local community and an improved environment for our staff to work in.”
