Health and Care Research Wales: National Centre for Mental Health (NCMH)

Type of organisation: Academic, NHS, Contract Research & Testing

The National Centre for Mental Health (NCMH) brings together world-leading researchers from Cardiff, Swansea and Bangor Universities to learn more about the triggers and causes of mental health problems.

We aim to help improve diagnosis, treatment and support for the millions of people affected by mental ill-health every year, as well as tackle the stigma faced by many. Key to achieving these aims is to engage with services and their users, the third sector and the wider public to increase understanding of mental illness, and by supporting and undertaking mental health research.

Our mission is to improve the mental health and wellbeing of the people in Wales, with our overarching aims to:
o Advance mental health (MH) and learning disability (LD) research in Wales – to support areas of excellence and develop capacity in new areas.
o Engage with patients, their families, the wider public and third sector organisations in Wales to increase understanding of MH and LD and the need for research.
o Change the research culture of the NHS in Wales, with the ultimate goal of MH services that see research as core activity and all individuals accessing care being invited to participate in research.
