Aneurin Bevan Fracture Liaison Service Receives National Recognition for Improving Patient Care
The Aneurin Bevan Fracture Liaison Service has been recognised as a national leader in using healthcare data to improve patient outcomes, receiving two major honours at the Excellence in Clinical Audit Awards 2026.
Presented during Clinical Audit Awareness Week (22-26 June), the service received both the Evidence into Practice Award 2026 and the Using National Clinical Audit Commendation Award 2026 for its project, Delivering Excellence in Secondary Fracture Prevention: Implementation of the Service.
The project uses innovative digital technology to identify patients with fragility fractures more quickly. By automatically flagging radiology reports containing the word “fracture”, the service has significantly improved case finding and enabled earlier intervention for patients at risk of future fractures.
The impact has been substantial. Since 2020, fracture identification rates have increased from 24% to 77%, while 60% of patients are now receiving appropriate bone-protective treatment. The service has also achieved nationally benchmarked standards for medication adherence and improved care for patients with pelvic fractures.
The service has worked closely with the Royal College of Physicians’ Fracture Liaison Service Database audit programme, enabling robust performance monitoring and continuous improvement.
The success of the model has extended far beyond the Health Board. Over the past three years, the approach has been successfully adopted across Wales, helping drive the rollout of Fracture Liaison Services in every Welsh health board. Nationally, the proportion of fragility fracture patients identified in Wales increased from 16% in 2023 to 48% in 2025.
This progress contributed to Wales becoming the first UK nation to secure a ministerial mandate for universal Fracture Liaison Services.
Dr Inderpal Singh OBE, Consultant and National Clinical Lead, said:
“We are delighted to receive this recognition. Our project demonstrates how data and evidence-based practice can be used to target improvements where they have the greatest impact on patient care.”
“This award highlights the value of clinical audit in driving meaningful change. By combining innovation with practical, data-led interventions, we have been able to deliver measurable improvements for patients across Wales.”
The Excellence in Clinical Audit Awards celebrate projects that turn evidence into real-world improvements. The success of AB FLS demonstrates the powerful role that digital innovation, clinical audit and collaboration can play in preventing fractures and improving patient outcomes.
