Cytiva – the power of liquid biopsy
Judith, an 86-year-old grandmother from London, was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2020. Through a liquid biopsy, that is, testing blood rather than tissue samples for genetic mutations, Judith was able to receive targeted treatment and a year after diagnosis is doing well.
In a new film produced for Cytiva by BBC StoryWorks Commercial Productions, Judith’s story shows that when we accelerate scientific research more patients can benefit. The team worked with The Institute of Cancer Research, London, and The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust in the UK to tell this story. Internationally renowned academic and consultant medical oncologist Professor Nicholas Turner, from The Institute of Cancer Research and The Royal Marsden, speaks about the potential of liquid biopsies. From our site in Cardiff, Wales, Monika Seidel, Senior Scientist at Cytiva, explains how blood is analyzed in the lab and the challenges for researchers.
“Stories like this bring what we do in our industry into sharp relief,” says Emmanuel Abate, Vice President of Genomics and Cellular Research at Cytiva. “We are pleased to play our part in advancing research through the work of our customers, work that ultimately helps patients like Judith.”
The film was produced for Cytiva by BBC StoryWorks Commercial Productions – the commercial content division of BBC Global News – and is presented by MedTech Europe. It is part of the ‘Connecting the Dots’ series which highlights some of the most pioneering devices, diagnostic solutions and services that are improving outcomes for patients and transforming entire systems of care.
