Health Technology Wales guidance: Permanent implant brachytherapy to treat pancreatic cancer
Health Technology Wales (HTW) has published new guidance on the use of permanent implant brachytherapy devices (PIBD) to treat pancreatic cancer when surgery is not an option (unresectable pancreatic cancer).
According to HTW’s guidance the use of PIBD cancer in addition to conventional treatment is not supported by the evidence.
It states that randomised control trials did not show any improvement for people living with unresectable pancreatic cancer, compared to using chemotherapy alone.
In addition, according to the guidance, treatment with brachytherapy is technically challenging with a risk of adverse events.
