PTHB digital therapy team backs Government’s mental health vision

NHS Wales’ online cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) team has welcomed the Welsh Government’s commitment to digital therapies and early intervention as outlined in its new Mental Health and Wellbeing Strategy.

The proposals – out for consultation until June – promise a “broad new, approach” to mental health provision for the next decade.

With a strong focus on prevention, they aim to empower people to improve their mental health while removing barriers and stigma around getting help. The Senedd also hopes to build on the success of online CBT and easy-to access-support like 111 press 2.

Online CBT project manager Fionnuala Clayton commented: “Our service meets key objectives of the Welsh Government’s new strategy and we very much hope to play a part in bringing these plans to fruition.

“With easy, online access, self-referral and no waiting lists, our focus is very much on prevention first whilst breaking down barriers to care.

“We’re providing an equitable service with a range of programmes to support individual needs, and with a personalised, human touch provided by our team of online supporters.”

The strategy calls for “appropriate, timely interventions” for mild to moderate mental health conditions, and recognises that for many this means access to guided, self-help therapy.

NHS Wales’ digital provision, based at Powys Teaching Health Board, is powered by online mental health platform SilverCloud®.

The interactive programmes teach practical coping skills for mild to moderate mental health issues and can be accessed anonymously online – without seeing a GP or joining waiting lists – via any mobile, tablet, laptop or desktop device.

Support through the programmes is provided for 12 weeks, but service users can set their own pace and access material and exercises even after completing courses. Progress is monitored by trained practitioners, who provide fortnightly feedback and can escalate more serious cases to access further support.

Almost 30,000 people have received support from the service – funded by the Welsh government – since it piloted in Powys in 2018.

Two of the service’s most popular programmes are offered in Welsh, with more Welsh-language support in the pipeline.

“We’re taking an integrated and collaborative approach to developing our service pathways across the country,” said Fionnuala.  “We’re aiming to expand the referral service across several health boards over the coming months and we’re committed to supporting a healthier Wales into 2030 and beyond.”
