Royal Gwent Hospital Makes Welsh History with First Da Vinci Robot Colorectal Surgery
Yesterday marked a proud moment for Wales as Royal Gwent Hospital became the first in the country to carry out colorectal surgery using the advanced Da Vinci surgical robot.
Consultant Surgeons Mr Codd and Mr Williamson of Aneurin Bevan University Health Board led this pioneering work, placing the Gwent area at the forefront of surgical innovation.
The Da Vinci robot allows surgeons to perform complex procedures through tiny incisions with greater precision, reduced trauma to the body, and faster recovery times for patients.
“This was a historic step forward for surgical care in Wales,” said Mr Jeremy Williamson, Consultant Colorectal Surgeon. “The enhanced accuracy of robotic-assisted surgery helped us perform delicate procedures with far less impact on the body—benefiting both outcomes and recovery.”
Mr Rhodri Codd added: “We’re incredibly proud to bring this technology to our patients in Gwent and grateful to Aneurin Bevan University Health Board for supporting our vision to improve access to world-class surgical care.”
