Welsh healthcare firm relocates to new headquarters – marks 20 years with major expansion

A family-run Welsh healthcare equipment business has moved to new headquarters at an industrial estate having doubled its turnover in its 20th year.

Healthcare Matters has relocated to a HQ at Llay Industrial Estate, near Wrexham, as turnover reached £4.6m and its workforce grew to 53 people.

The business supplies a range of medical equipment and maintenance services to the NHS, the private care sector and individuals at home.

Representing a significant step up in capacity, the company is using the new space to launch a professional training hub for occupational therapists, district nurses and community carers. This is alongside plans to roll out a new digital resource designed to improve the quality of life for vulnerable patients living independently.

It was founded in 2004 by Phil Spiby following a life-changing cardiac event that prompted him to pursue his entrepreneurial ambitions. Since then, the business has grown from a specialist bed and mattress franchise into one of North Wales’s most established healthcare equipment providers

Business Wales Accelerated Growth Programme (AGP), which provides targeted support for ambitious, growing firms, has supported Healthcare Matters.

The company, over the years, has received a range of specialist support through the programme, includingl eadership and management development for its senior team, carbon reduction planning, and artificial intelligence (AI) support. All of these have contributed to its growth and operational resilience.

Adam Spiby, managing director of Healthcare Matters, said: “Reaching our 20th year is a proud moment, but what excites us most is where we are heading. Doubling our turnover and growing the team to 53 people reflects the trust our NHS, local authority and private care partners place in us. It also shows the commitment of our incredible staff, 95 per cent of whom come from this community.

“Our growth has always been organic and built on a simple belief: treat people the way you would want to be treated, and provide the best possible solutions. That ethos runs through everything, from our 24-houremergency maintenance service to the hands-on training we now offer healthcare professionals at our new site, where we help occupational therapists, district nurses and carers feel genuinely confident using specialist equipment.

“Our new headquarters also gives us a platform to share the Lean methodology approach that has been central to our own efficiency and growth. We plan to offer tours and workshops to other businesses across Wales. We are also developing a new digital tool to support isolated and vulnerable patients, which we lookforward to launching in the coming months.

“Having access to targeted expertise at the right time through the AGP programme has been genuinely valuable and has helped us move the business forward with greater confidence.”
